A convoy that was en route from Taunggyi Township to Sisai Township to deliver supplies to the temporarily displaced families in Yebyu village, located in Sisai, southern Shan State was attacked by terrorists.
On May 7th, an aid convoy was dispatched from Taunggyi to Sisai, comprising officials from the Indonesian and Singaporean embassies in Myanmar and representatives of the AHA Center. The purpose of the convoy was to deliver humanitarian aid in accordance with the fourth point of ASEAN's Five-Point Consensus, which emphasizes the 'provision of humanitarian assistance by ASEAN'. The convoy was escorted by security forces, but as it approached Nant Aw village in Sisai Township, terrorists who had been lying in wait opened fire with small arms from a distance of approximately 200 meters north of the village. In response, the security forces accompanying the convoy retaliated, causing the terrorists to retreat. After the attack, local security forces maintained a high level of vigilance and implemented necessary security measures around the attack site.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported from the attack. However, one of the vehicles belonging to the security forces accompanying the convoy was hit by small arms fire and sustained minor damage.
The Union Government is working in accordance with the fourth point of ASEAN's Five-Point Consensus, which emphasizes the 'provision of humanitarian assistance by ASEAN'. The government is making active efforts to provide humanitarian aid to those in need in a constructive manner and is committed to ensuring that necessary supplies are distributed to every person requiring assistance. In collaboration with relevant authorities, the Union Government is providing essential support materials to local residents who are facing various difficulties due to terrorist activities, while also prioritizing safety and facilitating travel for the affected communities.
The Union Government and the Tatmadaw are diligently working towards the overall development of the country and strengthening ties with international and neighboring nations. However, such deliberate and malicious acts perpetrated by these terrorists can severely impede the nation's progress towards peace and stability. These acts can also aggravate the difficulties faced by those who are already temporarily displaced, also causing further distress among locals.
The security forces will continue to undertake appropriate counter-terrorism operations in accordance with the law, with the top priority being the maintenance of law and order, community peace, and stability. In order to promote regional peace and stability, relevant authorities are encouraging locals to report any suspicious activities or signs of terrorism to the authorities as soon as possible.
